It is derived from Rifamycin, a naturally occurring chemical that is produced by a bacterium known as Streptomyces Mediterranei.
Generic Xifaxan proves effective against E. coli bacterial strains that cause traveler`s diarrhea. It works by preventing the growth of bacteria by preventing them from manufacturing proteins required for their survival. However, the drug will not prove effective against viral infections like common cold, flu, etc.
